Beloit College Mindset List

The Beloit College Mindset List releases a list every year that describes the lives of the students entering college in the fall of 2014.  The way that the list describes the students’ lives is by describing norms that they have in their lives.  This is a way for people of other generations to understand what the class of 2014 is all about.  The list describes how our technology generation differs from past generations.
Some of the items on the list however depict the class of 2014 as inconsiderate and rather unintelligent.  For instance when the list says, “few in the class know how to write cursive” this is completely untrue.  We do not like to use cursive but if we had to we could write in it.  I also don’t think that you can accurately say that everyone in the class of 2014 do or do not know how to write in cursive.   A statement that Beloit Midlist addresses, “Al Gore has always been animated,” indicates that the class of 1014 has had no interest or knowledge in politics which is once again grouping all of the students into one way of thinking.
In this article I believe for most part was dead on about the class of 2014.  I think that the majority of the items on the list accurately described how the class of 2014 lives and how we grew up.   A statement on the list that I believe was the most like me was,” Buffy has always been meeting her obligations to hunt down Lothos and the other blood-sucker at Hemery High.” I have to admit that I myself do enjoy the vampire series, twilight, so it made me relate to the list more. This statement addresses how the craze for vampires has explode in our lifetime.  It seems that every show and movie filmed have something to do with vampires.  This is just one of the statements that address very accurately how our environment is like.
In this list I believe that it is a good representation of how our culture is different from past generations.  This article really opens people from all generations and backgrounds to more clearly understand the different environments that everyone comes from.  This list makes me want to understand past generations more and to look at past Beloit list from previous years.  From the list compiled from Beloit I think it’s pretty clear that the 1014 generation  is a pretty good generation to be living in.

  1. I have to agree that this list does kind of make the class of 2014 look stupid. I became aware of politics right about the time I could figure out what it was. It's kind of hard not to hear Al Gore's name even back then. But I have to disagree with your vampire comments. Many people like Twilight (but I don't), but I think fewer remember Buffy and even fewer actually liked it. I didn't really watch it and I suppose others didn't as well.

  2. Our generation is a good one to live in. Look at all the advantages we have--fast cars, cell phones, the internet, pretty much any technology is useful to us. And yeah we have an obsession for vampires as of recently lol.

  3. Our generation is a good one, and I agree with some of your comments. I was not much into vampires or whatever, so that one slipped my mind. The politics one was good and I agree with you.

  4. I agree that this makes our class seem somewhat oblivious to the world, which isn't at all true. But the vampire thing is so true. And not only are they exploding into the culture, but changing how we think of typical vampire literature. But we do have a lot of opportunities with technology and live in a pretty good world.

  5. yeah, i completely agree with what you said about the cursive thing. because its not like we don't know how to write in cursive its just we haven't used it in like 7-10 years. well at least I haven't because the last time i wrote in cursive was probably 3rd or 4th grade.

  6. I agree to disagree...Just kidding I totally agree :)) I haven't had the pleasure of writing in cursive for a long time. I personally think that there is going to be a cursive revolution where everyone will write in cursive. I really liked reading your blog post.

  7. Your blog was very easy for me to relate to. I also am a Twight fan, and disagree with the cursive writing point. The list seems to have more current events which describe the class of 2014 rather than events that have happened throughout our life time and had an impact on how we live our life.

  8. Minus our stereotype, we do have a good generation. We are intelligent and I hope that the world can come to expect more of us. It's interesting to look at the other years on the list, and I can't help but to wonder what things are true and what things are inaccurate on those lists as well. Nice done blog.

  9. While the mindset of 2014 is very humiliating to me, I would have to agree that it does make the point that we take everything for granted and at surface value which very may well be true, which is what I think is what you were saying when you agreed with what the list said?

  10. again im gonna pick on the cursive. i think this is the one that shocked me the most and yet im not sure why but it kind of angers me. i spent time learning that and i know i saw no point to it but i did it. now they are trying to tell US what we dont know? i don't believe they have the right to tell us what we don't know. and what we really don't know is because the people in their generation failed to pass the knowledge while they were trying to upgrade technology so they could tell our generation how spoiled we are. that still doesn't seem quite right to me.

  11. I hadn't thought about looking at previous year's Beloit lists. That'd be really cool to look back on - especially our parents' decades! haha. Great post!

  12. I would also love to take a look at past years lists. This generation is crazy and hectic but i dont think I would trade living in it.

(okay I possibly would just to see a different time)
